A year in pictures
This gallery contains 364 photographs taken one each day during the year 2007.
The mayority of the shots where taken using a Canon PowerShot SD800 IS,
in other cases where I did not have it, I used friend's cameras, mobile phone cameras or any other available device.
Why I did this?
For several reasons, I got a new digital camera at the end of 2006 and was very excited about it. And I guess I was just
looking for a reason to use it.
Even though photography has always been one of my hobbies, I had stopped carrying my camera around all the time,
mainly because of the size of it, but since this would no longer be a problem with the new one, I decided that I would
always have it with me during the next year and take a few shots every day; at the end of it I would pick my favourite one,
which would then become the picture of the day.
But...
It didn't turn out to be as easy as I thought it would be. First of all because it requires a lot of discipline. I was very
excited about the project at the begining and was looking forward to take pictures every day, but later I remember
that there were also some days where I really had to force myself to do it.
And second, I had not been taking photographs for a while, and I lost
the habit of observing every possible moment as if I was looking at it behind the lens of a camera, always looking
for a good composition, matching colors, or just an interesting shot, and so I found it really
difficult to come up with something different every day, or sometimes even a decent shot.
There were many days when I was going through the daily pictures, that I was not able to pick any that I liked, but I had
to pick one anyways, so what I did in this case was to choose the photo that was for me to most representative of what I
did that day.
Was this my own idea?
No, is not my own idea. Several people have done it as well for different reasons. For example
Taylor McKnight or another example here
and here
and also here.
Why not all the pictures have description?
There are many shots which I don't remember the name of the location where I took it, and there
are others that I thought having a description would be unnecessary because the picture is self
descriptive, and I thought that it would be stupid to have something like "train tracks" or
"glass on a table", etc.
Why 364 photos and not 365?
Because one day I forgot :(
Will I do it again?
Yes I will.
After the end of 2007, I was glad that this was over. But now that I look at the end result, I considered doing it
again.
I like the idea of being able to look back at any day during that year and recall what I did, where I was, who I was with,
or even what I ate.
Also I think that after taking many different photos a day has helped me become more creative and a better photographer.
So I'm planning to repeat it in the year 2009.
